The rights of a culture to "cover its women in portable tents" does NOT trump the rights of the disabled, and since its discriminatory against the disabled, its illegal!!!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5380090049852721671.post-24545516817706202582013-09-21T09:35:54.712-07:002013-09-21T09:35:54.712-07:00Hello Jacobin - just to say that if you would pref...Hello Jacobin - just to say that if you would prefer, and should you write another post which you are happy to have cross-posted, I can turn the HP comments off for that post and force everyone to come here if they want to comment - because you said you didn't like them being deleted.SarahABUKhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02162666068166925393noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5380090049852721671.post-78848776905379595132013-09-20T19:17:34.566-07:002013-09-20T19:17:34.566-07:00Thank you.Thank you.Unrepentant Jacobinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09256579083755037018noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5380090049852721671.post-67712193634068716252013-09-20T16:40:03.316-07:002013-09-20T16:40:03.316-07:00http://www.leninology.com/2012/10/meme-logic.htmlhttp://www.leninology.com/2012/10/meme-logic.htmlOllie Wnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5380090049852721671.post-27956492542783355682013-09-20T10:15:01.962-07:002013-09-20T10:15:01.962-07:00From Sarka at HP
My comment from HP where this ar...From Sarka at HP

My comment from HP where this article was cross-posted...reproduced at the command of the Jacobin...

Just on Faifi - rather more is going on here than just some deeply internalised obedience to blokes in robes.

She is an almost stereotypical "Islamic feminist" - if you looks at her other stuff, including FOSIS talks, she is all about the strategy of trying to push female emancipation within Islam by a process of fundamentalist reinterpretation of Scripture and tradition.
Islamic feminism has been well described as the "unwanted child" of Islamism. It has been a matter of some Muslim women picking up on the radical rebellious elements of Islamism both in order to justify rejection of the influence of merely conservative parents and family, and also to attempt (usually with very limited success) to counter the very feminism-unfriendly dynamics of Islamic revivalism while not stepping outside the faith or the modern identity movement.

Its rather pyrrhic achievements, so far, have been to supply Islamists and assorted revivalist pundits (male) with a basically western-derived idiom (plus handy selected scriptural cliches) for apologetics on the superiority of Islam for women over the west (empowerment of veiling etc etc..), and, directly, to confuse and wrong foot western liberals especially feminists. Within Islam and Islamic political movements its real achievements have been pretty negligible, because it is exploitable cosmetically, but otherwise definitely "ünwanted". Not that one wants to be too mean (it has accomplished some advancement of Muslim women in Islamic educational institutions), but is problem is that its representatives become obvious "tokens" and even "yes-women" for blokes in robes despite good intentions: while they are capable of talking about "unislamic" cultural oppression of women that should be stopped on "Islamic"grounds, they are very rarely to be found among Muslim- and Muslim-background women actually involved in the very difficult business of fighting these "unislamic" practices on the ground. I can see why Faifi is "addicted" to ISOCs - they are her perfect arena for getting Brownie points with the boys while convincing herself that she is fighting the good fight for the girls, and jeez, is she proud of her high media profile.

My objection - in the particular case of Faifi and others like her - to her embrace of niqab and arguments for it, is to her political bad faith. She doesn't see Muslim faith just as a nice personal thing to make her feel closer to God - she believes in it (and the desirability of niqab) as a a matter of ideal regulations and social order, so she really ought not to fall back on the personal liberal argument and entirely evade issues of veiling in social practice, not to mention the issue of coercion - whether informal or formal and legal in some Muslim states.
Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5380090049852721671.post-85785329945485602912013-09-20T06:38:12.548-07:002013-09-20T06:38:12.548-07:00Your last paragraph is extremely powerful and I fu...Your last paragraph is extremely powerful and I fundamentally agree with you. However, as we know, the veil is an extension and symptom of a patriarchal religion/culture and misogyny which will continue even if the veil is banned. In fact, the 'freedom' of Muslim women who are forced to wear the veil in public may be further restricted if it is banned - as they may not be permitted to leave the house at all!! So I don't agree with a wholesale ban but think it should definitely be banned in schools, courts, hospitals and airports.

It really depresses me that some Muslim women 'choose' to wear the veil and I firmly believe this is a false choice (internalised misogyny). We can only hope that the veil will no doubt become obsolete in time as attitudes in Muslim communities change - just like Chinese foot binding - and the sooner the better.

Jennifer de SantosAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5380090049852721671.post-15931701901948779662013-09-20T05:52:24.029-07:002013-09-20T05:52:24.029-07:00If it is made illegal, who will be arrested and pr...If it is made illegal, who will be arrested and prosecuted?

It may be hard to prove that any one person in particular is responsible for making her wear it, so you will have to prosecute her. In which case, by the reasoning of this article, the state will be prosecuting women for doing something they know she has been coerced to do.

Darren Ball, LondonAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5380090049852721671.post-13284054163589890712013-09-20T01:29:34.324-07:002013-09-20T01:29:34.324-07:00What exactly is "Jewish Nazi apologia". ...What exactly is "Jewish Nazi apologia".
